New Music Gear Monday: Mastering The Mix Expose Mix Quality Control App

Mastering The Mix ExposeAs I’ve written before, there’s no need to do specific mixes for streaming services like Spotify, since most labels and aggregators like TuneCore will submit a 44.1kHz/16 bit file anyway. Plus, the streaming services do their own encoding and normalization, so there’s no benefit in doing it yourself. That said, it’s always good to know what your mix will sound like on one of these services, and that’s exactly what Mastering The Mix’s new Expose quality control app does, and much more.

Expose doesn’t stop at allowing you to listen to what your processed audio will sound like on a streaming network. It does a full analysis of the audio, gives you detailed information about the loudness, peaks, stereo/phase information, and dynamic range of your audio, then identifies any potential issues. That’s a lot already but Expose goes one step further, allowing you to isolate the specific issues on the waveform so you can go back and fix your mix to get the utmost when it’s encoded later by the streaming service. This feature is what separates Expose from some other similar measurement/monitor apps on the market.

The app measures a variety of mix parameters, including:

  • Integrated LUFS
  • Short Term LUFS
  • Decibels True Peak (16X Oversampling)
  • Sample Peak
  • Left / Right heat map
  • Correlation heat map
  • Short Term Dynamic Range
  • Loudness Range

It also contains presets for general categories like Mixing, Mastering, Broadcast, and user-defined. The mastering presets include algorithms for SoundCloud, YouTube, Spotify, Apple Music, Mastered for iTunes (MFIT), Composer, Club and CD.

Mastering The Mix’s Expose is a standalone app that is equality at home on Mac or Window-based platforms. The best part is the cost, which carries an introductory price of only £9 ($11.87). Normally it’s £29 ($28.25), which is still quite a bargain for this app. You can also try it for free for 15 days. Order it or find out more details here.

Expose is needed by mixers more than ever, since any mix these days will be distributed by a wide streaming services. You owe it to yourself and your clients to know what will happen in advance.
