Al Machera on Bobby Owsinski's Production BlogMy guest today is Al Machera, who started off engineering in Miami before moving back to his home city of New York, where he stepped into the middle of the hip hop revolution as the main engineer for Salt n Peppa.

Eventually Al made his way to Los Angeles where he worked for Radio and Records magazine before signing on as a co-owner and CEO of the famed Westlake Studios. The studio is noted for hosting an elite clientele including Michael Jackson, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, Madonna, Van Halen, Josh Groban, Dave Matthews, Kelly Clarkson, Missy Elliott, Nine Inch Nails, Justin Bieber, and Fifth Harmony, among many others.

In the interview we spoke about Al’s unique background, some history of Westlake including the Michael Jackson years and studios he used for his big hits Off The WallThriller and Bad, the Westlake way of doing things, and Westlake’s Cre-8 Music Academy with its innovative approach to teaching recording.
