A Conversation With Rupert Neve

Virtually everyone on the creation side of the music business nows the name Rupert Neve, as well they should. Rupert’s consoles have been amongst the most beloved in the business, known for their quality and sound.

In this excellent video from Sound on Sound, Rupert (who’s 89 and still sharp as a tack, by the way) describes his journey.

What I found interesting is that his early EQs were made not so much for changing the tonal quality of instruments but for changing the balance of the instrument in a previously recorded tape during mastering.

He also describes the philosophy behind his EQs and the technical reason why some competitor’s EQs don’t sound as “sweet.” Also, why his designs sound better than cookie-cutter designs using the typcial and cheaper integrated circuits, why transformers are better, and much more.

This is a bit on the technical side but worth the listen.
