New Music Gear Monday: Royer AxeMount Dual Microphone Clip

The standard configuration for miking electric guitar amps has been with an old trusty Shure SM57 and Royer R-121 ribbon mic for some time now. The SM57 gives the guitar sound its aggressiveness to cut through the mix, while the R-121 provides the body and fullness. The problem is that you usually need 2 mic stands for the setup, which means placement, stand movement, running out of floor space, and host of other issues are likely to ensue. What if we could do it all with just one stand? Well that problem has been solved with the new Royer AxeMount dual microphone clip.

The AxeMount allows you to place a 57 (or similar shaped mic) close to the ribbon of the R-121 to keep them both phase coherent with just one stand and one mic clip. What could be easier?

While placing a 57 on the dome of speaker usually results in a sound that’s too harsh, placing it facing the paper part of the speaker smooths everything out. The opposite is true for the R-121 though, as it seems to thrive placed looking at the speaker dome. The AxeMount gets you that ideal placement in a flash.

Co-designed with SLR of Windsor, Ontario, Canada, the AxeMount is manufactured by SLR in Canada and distributed by Royer. The MRSP is a very reasonable $49.99, but I see them being sold in most stores and online for just $39.99. It’s worth every penny in my opinion as every second saved from setting up is a second more that can be used in recording.
