New Music Gear Monday: Boz Digital Pan Knob Plugin

Have you ever panned a mix element wide and liked the placement but noticed that it sounded unnatural? How about a bass with a cool stereo effect but no anchor in the middle? The reason for this is that standard every day panning in your DAW or on your console moves all the frequencies of a mix element to the place in the stereo soundfield of your choosing, but that doesn’t always end up sounding the way we think it will. That’s why the very cool Pan Knob from Boz Digital might be the answer. It allows you to move only the higher frequencies out to the soundfield, while keeping the lows in the center.

As you’d expect, there’s not a lot of parameters to Pan Knob, but it does have a couple of extra cool features. The X Over knob selects the frequency where the plugin separates the frequencies in the middle and the ones that will be panned. The large Pan control acts as a normal pan control with a twist. Instead of being able to pan to 100% left or right, you can actually go to 120%!

What happens is that there’s actually some delay that’s injected into the signal past 100% that provides a wider than wide soundfield. While this would normally result in something that sounds way unnatural, Pan Knob keeps it cool thanks to the X Over pumping those low freqs to the center of the soundfield (this only works with the X Over turned on).

There’s also a switchable Mode selection that turns the Pan into a balance control with a stereo signal. And you can change the panning law from -6dB (which boosts the signal by 6dB when you pan hard left or hard right) or Linear (which provides no boost).

The best part is that Pan Knob is now only $14.99 instead of its normal $49 so it’s super affordable. It’s available for Macs and PCs in all plugin formats and there’s a trial period as well.
