New Music Gear Monday: Korneff Audio Sitral Klangfilter W295 EQ Plugin

Every time you think that every vintage EQ available has already been modeled, another interesting one shows up. That’s the case with the Sitral Klangfilter W295 made specifically for German broadcast in the 1960s. Built to the utmost quality available at the time, the Sitral is about as sweet an EQ that you’ll find, and Korneff Audio has gone to great lengths to model it.

Dan Korneff’s tastes in hardware outboard gear are somewhat quirky, but always with a purpose, and just about every product in the Korneff Audio line not only has a “sound,” but has ways to tailor it to be your sound as well. The Sitral is no exception.

Three Modules

The Sitral Klangfilter W295 is actually made up of three modules. The original W295 features high and low shelving bands along with a very wide switchable boost-only mid band. The W295a replaces the switchable mid band with an unusual mid tilt control, while the W295b replaces mid band EQ with one that’s switchable and allows for boost and cut.

That’s pretty much were the hardware ends, but like with most Korneff Audio plugins, there’s plenty of variability under the hood.

For instance, the high frequency EQ band can be switched between 15k and 20kHz, while the low frequency EQ band can be switched between 40Hz and 100Hz. Plus there are also variable frequency high and low pass filters for each channel.

Speaking of which, the channels can be linked or independent, the controls can be switched from stepped to continuously variable, and there’s an Auto Gain feature also available to keep those peaks in check.

Add to that a built-in frequency analyzer, and input and output level meters and controls, and this plugin soars way past the hardware version.

Under The Hood

But we’re not done. Like on all Korneff Audio plugins, there’s also an under-the-hood section that essentially controls the analog character of the plugin’s sound. There you can choose to have a modeled transformer inserted in the signal path, as well as control it’s saturation, color, and more.

The Korneff Audio Sitral Klangfilter W295 is now available at a 50% off introductory price of $64.99 (normally $129.99). It works on both Mac and PC and with all plugin formats.
