Users Rejoice – Cakewalk Purchased From Gibson By Bandlab

You’ve probably been pretty depressed if you’re a Cakewalk Sonar user after Gibson announced it would no longer support the product line at the end of last year. Hopefully you haven’t made a transition to a new DAW yet, because the unforeseen has happened as Bandlab Technologies has announced that it has acquired all the intellectual property assets of Cakewalk from Gibson.

Bandlab started as a social music platform for both creators and fans but has been expanding rapidly recently with a number of other music-related company acquisitions. These include the case and gig bag company Mono Creators, the DJ streaming service Chew, and more recently the historic guitar brands Teisco and Harmony.  The Singapore-based company also owns an interest in Rolling Stone magazine and has branched into hardware with its first recording interfaces hitting the market last year, while also recently partnering with Heritage Guitars. It also owns Swee Lee, Asia’s leading online retailer and distributor of musical instruments and pro-audio brands.

Cakewalk is best known for its digital audio workstation Sonar, as well as its myriad of digital instruments such as Dimension Pro, Rapture Pro, Z3TA+ 2, Session Drummer, and SFZ+ among others.

It’s not clear how Cakewalk fits into Bandlab at the moment, as no additional information has been released.

This is certainly great news for Sonar users, even though the announcement is a little light on the details. The DAW has a wide range of avid users, and it’s good to see it in the hands of a company that appears to care about its future.
