New Music Gear Monday: Solid State Logic SSL 1 USB-C Audio Interface

If you’ve spent any time around consoles, you know the SSL name carries enormous weight. The company built its reputation on the 4000 and 9000 series desks that shaped decades of hit records. The SSL 1 takes that same design philosophy and shrinks it down into a compact 2-in/2-out box that anyone can afford and carry around for those on-the-go recording sessions.

SSL 1 portable audio interface

Simple But Effective

At its core, the SSL 1 uses a single SSL-designed mic preamp with 48V phantom power and a built-in high-pass filter, along with a second input that switches between instrument and line level. That covers the basics for tracking vocals, guitar, bass, or a synth.

What sets it apart from other budget interfaces is the Legacy 4K Analogue Enhancement switch, which pulls in the harmonic coloration and high-frequency lift associated with the classic 4K series consoles. It’s a nice way to add some character before the signal even hits your DAW.

The converters are next-generation 32-bit, running up to 192kHz, and the unit includes a high-current headphone output up front for monitoring without the usual budget-interface hiss.

On the rear panel you’ll find balanced monitor outputs and dual USB-C connections, one for audio and one that lets you run the interface off a power bank or phone charger. That’s a useful touch for anyone needing a truly portable recording setup.

Built For More Than Tracking

Content creators get three stereo loopback channels for capturing system audio, which makes the SSL 1 a solid option for podcasters and streamers as well as musicians. There are also DC-coupled outputs, so if you’re into modular synths, you can send control voltage straight from the interface.

Every SSL 1 comes bundled with the SSL Production Pack, a collection of virtual instruments, samples, and software tools from companies like Harrison Audio, Antares, Native Instruments, IK Multimedia, and Ableton. Registering the unit also opens the door to the wider SSL Family, which includes ongoing offers on plugins.

The SSL 1 has an MSRP of $159.99 and works with Mac, Windows, and iOS devices. You can find out more here, or watch the video below for more details.
