Eric Clapton “Layla” Isolated Guitar And Vocal Tracks

Layla isolated tracks on Bobby Owsinski's Production BlogWe haven’t done an isolated track for a long time, but I thought that this one would be good to get us back in the swing of things. It’s the isolated lead vocal and lead guitar tracks from Derek And The Domino’s (Eric Clapton) classic hit “Layla.” On it you’ll hear snippets of the 6 guitar tracks that were used, as well as Eric’s lead vocal.

What’s interesting here is how much Duane Allman’s slide work is utilized in the song. He takes both the solo of the main body of the song, and then again on the instrumental part of the song at the end (which was recorded 3 weeks after the original track). Eric plays fills in and around the vocal as well as the other guitar parts.

Also take note of the reverb on Clapton’s vocal. By itself it doesn’t sound that great (a bit too tinny for my tastes) but it melts right into the final mix so you never actually hear it, which is what most reverb effects do.

“Layla” was recorded at Criteria Studios in Miami in 1970 and produced by the legendary Tommy Dowd. Below the isolated track is a great video of Tommy going through the song at Criteria.
