Confessions Of Top Studio Musicians
Studio musicians are frequently unsung not only for their playing, but for their contributions to the songs they many times help arrange. Occasionally they get credit and even some royalties, but usually that’s not the case. Of course, session players (especially the top studio musicians) were used a lot more on the hits of yesterday than they are today, when production is based more around samples, loops and virtual instruments than real players.
That said, here’s a vintage video featuring some of the top guys of the 70s and 80s (guitarist Waddy Wachtel, keyboardist Craig Doerge, drummer Russ Kunkel, bassist Lee Sklar and bassist Will Lee – all still quite active today) that have some great stories about some of the sessions they’ve been on.
In fact, if you want to read more from Lee Sklar, you can access this excerpt from my Studio Musician’s Handbook (written with bassist Paul ILL).
