The Andy Wallace EQ Philosophy

Andy Wallace mix philosophyAndy Wallace is one of my favorite mix engineers, with a wide variety of credits across different genres, ranging from Korn, Avenged Sevenfold and Nirvana to Kelly Clarkson and Faith Hill. Andy’s still old school in that he’s a console-in-the-studio guy, but that doesn’t diminish his mixes one bit. In fact, that very well may be a reason why so many high-profile artists still seek him out to mix their records.

While an analog console may be a component of the Andy’s sound, it’s certainly just a small part of what contributes to his great mixes. As with all great mixers, the ears and taste are what you’re paying for, but sometimes it comes down to how the mixer approaches the song as well.

In this video, Andy shows how he gets the smack in the kick drum of an Avenged Sevenfold song, then, more importantly, discusses his mix philosophy in terms of EQ and frequency response.
