New Music Gear Monday: Waves Sync-VX Vocal Alignment Plugin

One of the things that young producers sometimes overlook is vocals that aren’t tight enough. Unless vocalists sing together all time, they’re just not used to singing as closely as needed, and that even applies to a vocalist doing all the vocals themselves. As a result you have tracks that are slightly out of sync to one another and don’t sound very professional. This requires a lot of editing, which can be quite the chore if there are a lot of tracks to deal with. Enter Waves Sync-VX, a super-easy way to align all the vocal tracks in almost no time at all.

As I said, manual editing can take up a lot of time, and sometimes the editor only concentrates on the attacks of each word or phrase. In reality, the releases are just as, or even more important to tightness, but are many times not even considered. Sync-VX fixes both in a flash.

It’s Fast

All you have to do is insert the plugin on each vocal track, then designate one as the reference, click on the Sync button, and Sync-VX does the rest. It will even tune the vocals as needed if something is a little off.

Have harmonies or background answer vocals? No problem, just deselect the Pitch button in the harmony vocal tracks and those harmonies are preserved.

Sometimes if vocals are too tight, the thickness that a double provides goes away. You can overcome this tweaking the Time control on each track to make it sound more natural. And you can do the same with the Pitch control as well.

That’s probably as much as most engineers and producers will ever need, but if you want you can dive down a lot deeper too.

The Waves Sync-VX plugin is available for $129.99 (regularly $199). That might seem like a lot, but considering how much time and tedium you’ll save, it’s a bargain.
