Trevor Horn Talks Production

Trevor Horn is one of the most successful and innovative producers ever, with credits that include Yes, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Grace Jones, Seal, and many more. What’s not often known about him is how cutting edge and quietly groundbreaking his production techniques have been.

In the following video you’ll hear how Trevor made his first primitive “drum machine” on a tape machine, getting his start in production doing song demos for a publisher, his early drum and bass rig, his early use of the Fairlight, recording to digital without EQ, and so much more.

One of the best observations he has is about writing from the lyric instead of backing tracks, and why producers should always use an engineer. Really insightful!

If you haven’t seen it yet, here’s a great video were Trevor deconstructs Yes’s huge hit “Owner Of A Lonely Heart.” Yes, a Trevor Horn production is a work of art!
