New Music Gear Monday: Boz Digital Labs ProVocative Pitch Shifter Plugin

When the Eventide H910 Harmonizer first hit the street in the early 1980s, it didn’t take creative mixers long to discover that it could be used in an unintended way. Instead of trying to tune the pitch of a vocal, it could be used to thicken it in a way and with a sound not previously possible. By using two Harmonizers with one pitched up a few cents and the down down a few cents, just about any track could sound thicker. These days you don’t need those hardware units to achieve the same effect as there are a number of plugins available, but the latest one from Boz Digital Labs, the ProVocative, makes it easier than ever to get the same effect.

The ProVocative pitch shift plugin gives you that famous effect and has enough easy-to-use parameters to tweak it exactly as needed. In the center of the plugin is a large Pitch control that creates two pitch-shifted tracks, one up and one down, which can then be adjusted from 1 to 20 cents, right in the sweet spot for the best effect.

The Width control adjusts how far to the sides the effect is panned. At 100% it’s hard left and right, while at zero it’s up the middle. You can also go negative, which swaps the panning of the up and down signals. Delay is the other major parameter, going from 20ms to 150ms.

There’s more though. There are also 12dB per octave high and low band filters right underneath so you can tailor the bandwidth of the effect to the track.

The mixing section in white at the bottom of the ProVocative plugin allows for control over the Wet and Dry signals (they can be linked), along with an Output level control.

The best part is that ProVocative doesn’t cost that much at just $49, but the even better part is that it’s currently on sale for just $19. Unlike many other effects plugins, it’s light on CPU resources so you don’t have to worry about stealing from other plugins.
